On one of Östermalm’s, Stockholm classic streets stands a multi-family building from the late 19th century that, over the years, has lost much of its former grandeur. The apartments had been divided into smaller units and renovated in stages, until there were barely any traces left of the original charm. When CJ Studio joined the project together with the developer, the goal was clear: to restore the building’s soul while adapting it to modern needs. We speak with Jonna Flordal, owner and architect at CJ Studio.
CJ Studio is an architecture firm that draws inspiration from everything around them – the city, nature, fashion, and both contemporary and historical colleagues in the industry. They describe their driving force like this:
“We are inspired by everything in our surroundings – from the city and nature to fashion and other colleagues in the industry, both past and present. We love our work, and we find it incredibly rewarding to work closely with our clients, helping them interpret and realize their visions and dreams, and exceed their expectations. We are driven by passion, relationships, and love for our profession.”
For CJ Studio, successful projects are about more than aesthetics – they are about creating environments where people truly thrive. It could be an office that feels almost as cozy as one’s own home, a wine bar with an atmosphere that evokes a lively Barcelona even though it’s tucked away on a backstreet in Stockholm, or a summer house in the archipelago where you find the perfect sheltered spot with sun from breakfast to dinner – a place you never want to leave

Tell us more about the project and the material choices you faced –
The idea was to highlight the unique roof shape, the dizzying ceiling height, and the large rooms with a warm material palette that also includes contrasts. The darker wood surfaces emphasize the shapes and lines where they meet the floor and the light-colored walls, Jonna explains further.
Tell us more about the choice of floor –
Large, open spaces inspire expansive, flowing floors. The chevron parquet picks up the different directions in the apartment while keeping the overall unity intact. The format is a nod to the building these apartments sit atop, but in this context, and combined with the shadow gap, it creates a contemporary feel. – Jonna Flordal
